Just because it’s old: museums and galleries in heritage buildings

This publication will help you understand the issues involved in setting up a museum, and the problems and the advantages of using an old or heritage building. You may decide after reading this guide that you would be better served to either relocate your museum elsewhere or to consider construction of a new building that takes account of all the needs of a museum from the ground up. You may also decide that the building is such an attractive proposition that you are prepared to proceed with your plans for a museum, but that you need to modify your ideas about the kind of museum or collection you will deal with.

While this is specifically aimed at Australia, the guidance on setting up a museum, a collection, and the assessment and re-use of historic buildings is generally applicable.
