I have collections of receipts that I am currently archiving.  They have been held together by straight pins since 1917.  It seems as if the original owner gathered the receipts into groups, building fund, utilities etc. and then straight pinned them.  Should I remove the pins?  Some have discolored over time.  Will they cause damage?  This also brings up an additional thought about old paper clips and fasteners of any type…

      Dear Linda,

As a proud NPS employee, I’d like to recommend an “oldie but goodie” Conserv-O-Gram:

http://www.nps.gov/museum/publications/conserveogram/19-05.pdf  “Removing Fasteners from Archival Documents.”  It has a good description of using a microspatula and protective strip of mylar to remove fasteners such as yours.
