A local historian was given a box of what he calls glass plate slides. He would like to know if there is anything he can use use to mark the slides with the dates and subject matter.

The best advice I have received from photograph conservators is to mark the enclosure, NOT the glass plate. Glass plate negatives (or slides) should be kept in an acid-free, lignin-free four-fold paper enclosure and the details can be written on this (BEFORE the glass is placed inside).
      Hope this helps
