I’ve been searching for a class, workshop, or course I can take for proper hinging of works on paper (large and small.) The Campbell Center recently had an offering I wasn’t able to attend because of our workload. Does anyone know of another place, school, group, or otherwise I could find instruction as a professional development. I’m not completely new to the idea but want to be trained by some sort of AIC standard.

      Hi Alex,

I just did some looking around the AIC website under Education and found this link for an online course in matting and framing. It looks like hinging is covered in the class. I would recommend contacting them and seeing if this is what you’re looking for.

I’ll also suggest using the Find a Conservator tool on the AIC website. You may find a conservator there who will work with you.

      Good luck!

Thank you for sending that. I am hoping to find some hands on training. Paste hinging is also requirement. I believe working directly with a conservator may be the way to go. Again, thank you.

      Hi Alex,

The Find A Conservator search on the AIC website allows you to search within 100 miles of Little Rock for conservators who specialize in conservation matting and framing. When I did this, it listed 18 results. I can’t speak for any one conservator, but I bet if someone happens to be doing hinging anyway, they would not mind if you observed them and practiced it with them present. They might ask you to bring your own hinging paper, but I would give contacting those folks a try if your need is immediate.

      Kind regards,

      Alex,

Also, participate in the next webinar, “Reframing the Problem: Caring for Framed Objects in Small Institutions (aka: On a Budget),” on February 9th, at 2:00 EST. Just go to the page for the webinar to sign up.
