The purpose of this program is to provide a basic understanding of cold storage and explain how to implement it for long-term preservation of film-based photographic collections. Cold storage provides a stable environment for film-based materials, extends their longevity and preserves them for future use. Research proves that cold storage environments can add hundreds of years of life to film-based materials that are near or at the point where deterioration is occurring. Therefore, it is vital to consider cold storage now before visual history is lost.
