Practical Nuts & Bolts Strategies: Day-to-Day Protection of Small Museums

Are you responsible for security & safety at your institution (just one of the many hats that you wear)? This session will address critical day-to-day security concerns, and provide valuable low-cost or no-cost tools for protecting staff, visitors, and collections. Topics will include: Hiring the Right People (including volunteers), Best Practices for Employee Screening, All-Staff Security Awareness, Protection Policies & Procedures, Preventing Internal & External Theft (including prevention of vandalism), Entry Screening for Small Museums, Access Control Considerations (including Key Control), Conflict Resolution & Confrontation De-Escalation, and Best Practices in Securing Collections on Exhibit and in Storage.

Layne, CPP, CIPM, CIPI is a nationally recognized leader in security management, loss prevention, emergency preparedness, violence prevention, litigation avoidance, and cultural property protection. Mr. Layne is a Certified Protection Professional and Certified Institutional Protection Manager and Instructor. He is the President of the International Foundation for Cultural Property Protection, President & Principal of Layne Consultants International, and Founding Director of The Protection Alliance. Steve has served as a U.S. Army Military Police Captain, Police Chief, Public Safety Director, and Museum Security Director. Steve is a regular presenter for AASLH, AAM, ALA, ASIS International and several other regional, national, and international cultural property associations. His recommendations set the standards for best practices in security, safety, and emergency preparedness.

Mr. Layne has provided protection planning, risk assessment, and training for hundreds of private and public organizations across the U.S. and abroad. Steve is the author of the Business Survival Guide, the Cultural Property Protection Manual, and most recently, Safeguarding Cultural Properties, as well as various industry publications, and numerous articles for media outlets and trade journals. He regularly contributes to national publications such as Security Management Magazine, the L.A. Times, and the Wall Street Journal.
