We have 7 tintypes that were fastened on the back of a mat with studio labels cut in strips. It has held them in place over 100 years. Should they be removed? If so, how exactly?

I would most likely leave the images as they are. I wouldn’t want to risk damaging the lacquer or scratching the metal. Would you be able share a snapshot of one of them?

Miriam: Your suggestions are what we also have concluded. The pictures are not available temporarily but if you wish, we can email you a picture of the tuintype backing in two weeks. Thank you for your response.
